Pet Passengers
Many of us will be hitting the roads in great numbers this holiday season. A few of us are going just down the road and others will be packing up to visit relatives/friends in other states. Many travelers plan on taking their pets along for the ride. If you are planning a road trip with your pets, here are some tips to make the journey more enjoyable:
- For the safety of all in the vehicle, pets need to be secured properly. The best choice is to put your pet in a crate for the duration of the trip. For large animals that might not be a feasible option. For these animals a special harness that attaches to your vehicle's seatbelt would be best.
- Try to refrain your pet from riding with their heads out the window. They risk being hit with a flying object, as well as getting inner ear damage and lung infections.
- Your pet may become frightened when traveling. Keep your pet on a leash when outside your car or hotel so they do not bolt away or jump out of open doors.
- The noises and movement from car travel may make your pet anxious. This anxiety can be expressed through barking, shaking, even vomiting. Prepare your pets for a long trip by getting them used to being in the car so they feel more comfortable.
- Don't feed your pet right before you leave. Give him or her a light meal a few hours in advance. Never feed your pet in a moving vehicle.
- Just as you will on a long trip, your pet will need periodic pit stops and stretch breaks. Bring along water, small treats, and a toy the pet can play with for some exercise.
- Make sure your pet travels with an identification tag in addition to its normal one. Write the pet's name, your name, the person to contact at the destination, their phone number, and a destination address.
- If you're planning an overnight trip, be sure to check in advance with the hotel to see whether they allow pets or not.
Pets are a part of the family so many of us want to bring them along for the ride. Just make sure to follow the above tips so that you protect them and make the trip enjoyable for all. Have a wonderful holiday season!
