Getting Geared Up For Winter
With winter fast approaching, it's important to make sure your vehicle
is equipped to handle the harsh conditions the season can bring. Even
though wintertime is generally a hectic time for many people, it is important
to not overlook proper car care during this crucial maintenance period.
The following are some tips to prepare your vehicle for winter conditions:
- Get a Tune-Up- It is essential in the winter to get your hoses, belts,
spark plugs, wires, and battery inspected by an automotive professional
and replaced if necessary. A tune-up is crucial to make sure your car
is in top condition and to minimize wear on your engine. Your car's
engine performs differently during the winter, so a tune-up will make
your car start easier and run better.
- Check Coolants- Antifreeze/coolant needs to be checked and topped
off before temperatures drop. If there is not a sufficient level of
antifreeze in your vehicle the water can freeze up, expand and crack
key engine components. Besides topping it off, antifreeze/coolant should
be flushed and refilled according to your manufacturer's recommendations.
- Check Tire Tread- Traction is crucial during the wintertime because
of slick road conditions. Bald tires should be replaced immediately
in order to avoid a possible dangerous situation.
- Inspect Tire Pressure- During the colder months it is imperative
to check tire pressure more frequently. Tires can lose 1 pound per
square inch of air pressure for every 10( drop in temperature. Under-inflated
tires will lessen gripping action because the tread will no longer
meet the road the way that it's supposed to.
- Replace Worn Brake Pads and Shoes- If your brakes squeal when you
stop, your vehicle pulls to the side when braking, or your vehicle
shakes when the brakes are applied you need to have your brake system
inspected as soon as possible.
- Check Windshield Wipers- Typically wiper blades need to be replaced
every 6 months and now is the perfect time to invest in some wipers
made specifically for winter conditions. During the winter months,
visibility is vital and if the blades are streaking or causing problems
they should be changed out.
- Make Sure the Headlights and Taillights are Working Properly- Since
there will be longer periods of darkness now, it is a good idea to
make sure that not only do the lights work, but that they are properly
aligned as well.
- Check to Make Sure that the Heater and Defroster are in Good Working
Condition- Make sure that the vents are not clogged and that they will
put out warm air when necessary.
- Prepare a Winter Emergency Road Kit- Essentials for this kit include
a cell phone, blankets, bottled water, snacks, ice-scraper, and warm
clothing.
With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it may seem like car maintenance
is something that can wait. However, by not protecting your car against
the harsh winter conditions you are creating unnecessary stress and taking
risks with your safety. Winter car care is essential to keeping you and
your family secure during the winter season.
